The issue:
Calculating the carbon stored by trees is a complex process that depends on various factors, including tree species, size, and health. For users, whether individuals or institutions, understanding the carbon impact of their trees required an automated and accurate system that accounted for these variables, rather than relying on generic estimates.
How we solved it:
We developed a comprehensive carbon calculation system for CmyTrees that utilises both detailed species-specific data and tree measurements to provide precise estimates of carbon storage. This solution is designed to give users a clear understanding of the environmental value of their trees, contributing to accurate tracking of carbon offsets.
The tech used:
- Species database integration: The core of our carbon calculation system relies on an extensive species database. If users know the exact species of a tree, they can input it directly; if unknown, broader species categories can be selected. Each species in the database has predefined growth rates and carbon storage capabilities, allowing for more accurate carbon estimates based on the specific tree type.
- Tree measurements & data processing: The tool automatically calculates the carbon storage using the tree’s measurements—height, diameter, and canopy size—collected via the mobile AR-based measurement tool. These dimensions are cross-referenced with the species data to ensure the carbon calculation reflects the unique characteristics of each tree.
- Estimate refinement: For unknown or generalised species inputs, the tool applies averages from the species database, ensuring that even without specific data, the carbon storage estimates remain reliable. This allows users to get detailed estimates with minimal input, while still allowing for refinement as more accurate information becomes available.
- Real-time carbon offset tracking: As users measure trees across their sites, the carbon calculation system continuously updates the total stored carbon and compares it to predefined offset targets. This real-time feedback helps users monitor their environmental impact, encouraging active management and tree planting to meet sustainability goals.
- Actionable insights: Beyond the raw carbon storage values, the tool converts these estimates into practical equivalencies (e.g., electricity, gas, and petrol savings). This gives users a more relatable understanding of their contribution to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing engagement with the tool.
By combining species-specific data with accurate tree measurements, our carbon calculation system provides users with a more detailed and actionable view of their environmental impact. This ensures that tree-based carbon offsets are tracked with precision, empowering users to make informed decisions about sustainability efforts.
